Over the years we have owned many chickens, and even gave chicken names to a few special ladies in our flock.
Chickens are becoming increasingly popular, and it’s easy to see why.
Adorable, fluffy-butt pets that live in your backyard, and give you fresh eggs. Who wouldn’t want that?
We came up with this list of chicken names, and even a few names for your roosters.
We like to keep our chicken’s names sweet and simple.
This makes them easy to remember, and much more practical.
Old Fashioned Chicken Names (Old Lady Chicken Names)
The tried and true! If the days of old seem beckon to you, you will love these old-fashioned names. The names on this list would be wonderful for Barred Rocks or Rhode Island Reds, the quintessential birds you may have seen on your Grandparent’s Farm.
Cute Chicken Names
Chickens, especially baby chicks are undeniably cute, so why not choose a cute name to match. I think these would be really nice names for Bantam Chickens. What is a Bantam Chicken, you ask? A Bantam, also called a Banty is a small breed of chicken.
Keeping these small chickens has a few advantages. They take up less space than large breed fowl, and they eat much less than bigger chickens, so the food bill isn’t quite as high. It is also worth noting that they do lay smaller eggs, and don’t lay as many eggs as larger Hens, however the eggs taste the same as those laid by bigger birds.
Floral Chicken Names
These names are for anyone that loves flowers and all things feminine. They would make especially nice names for Silkies or Sebrites. Did you know that Silkie Hens are prone to going “Broody”? Going broody is when a Hen gets the urge to sit on their nest and hatch out baby chicks.
Nature Names for Chickens
Some of us feel called to nature, the names on this list are inspired by the beauty of the natural world.
Candy Inspired Chicken Names
These names are reserved for the sweetest of chickens that warm your heart like a cup of hot cocoa. Faverolles come to mind, since they are undoubtedly one of the most docile chicken breeds. These feather-footed chickens lay a cream colored egg, and even the Roosters of this breed tend to be friendly and calm.
Food Inspired Chicken Names
Food names are some of my favorites. I mean, who wouldn’t want a chicken named Cheddar!
Funny Chicken Names
Some of the names on this list will be sure to tickle your funny-bone. Its always nice to have a sense of humor on the Homestead.

Royalty Inspired Chicken Names
Chickens are known for something called “pecking order”. This is the social order within the chicken flock, and defines each chickens level of dominance, and their ranking within the flock. These names are especially fitting for a Hen that is the Boss of the flock.
Names for Mean Chickens
We’ve all had the occasional mean Hen or Pullet from time to time. They definitely challenge you, and keep life interesting, but we wouldn’t change them for anything! (Mean Roosters are another story…) We just adore all our chickens, even if some of them do have a devilish side.
|Villan||Mrs. Bad Eggs||Banshee||Lil’ Terror|
Names for Roosters
If you have chickens, chances are good that you have a rooster hanging around somewhere. Roosters are so important as the protector of the flock. A good rooster is simply indispensable on the farm. They will find food for the Hens, keep the peace within the flock, and defend the flock from potential predators. If you free range your chickens, a good Rooster is worth his weight in gold, and he definitely needs a proper name.
